After teaching 6 budding DIYers how to build this at my DIY workshop with Black and Decker, I knew I’d have to share the full build plans and how-to as soon as I could. So here it is, full instructions, and a downloadable! So, are you ready to make something actually useful that also levels up your DIY skills?

This cute, super simple shaker style window box/planter is the perfect project to kick off your DIY learning journey as it helps you get comfortable with 4 power tools and 3 different types of joints! A planter build is great this time of year too as we’re all entering our *gardening era*, what’s more, the materials used cost less than £35, of if you’ve got similar dimensioned scraps laying around, you can really make it out of anything, just adjust the measurements accordingly.

During this project, you’ll learn/practice:

• How to use a circular saw, mitre saw, drill and palm sander

• Cross cuts (butt joints), bevel cuts (bevel joints) and mitre cuts (mitre joints)

• Measuring accurately, drilling pilot holes, countersinking screws, and sanding rough timber smooth

• Building your confidence in joining wood with glue, nails and screws

• adapting plans for different timber sizes if yours vary a bit (because, let’s face it, they always do)

(I’ve also put in some manual tool alternatives if you don’t have, or don’t want to use the power tools)
